Trendspotting: The Statement Strap

We know that the mind of Karl Lagerfeld contains many magical and mysterious things: glamour shots of his beloved Choupette, images of perfectly stacked bookshelves, chocolate sculptures of beautiful men and little furry monsters.  And now, we can add statement handbag straps covered in candy-colored studs to that wonderful list. I first encountered the Fendi Strap You collection at work and immediately thought three things:

1. I want that. 2. I obviously can’t spend $1,000 on a strap that doesn’t even come with a bag to clip it to. 3. It’s only a matter of time before this concept trickles its way down to us non-heiresses. As of now, Marc Jacobs and Rebecca Minkoff are offering affordable takes on the statement strap (both of which are pictured below), but until the fast-fashion world catches up, here are a few of my favorite designer takes on this trend to watch.

Trendspotting: Flamenco-Inspired Polka Dots

trend-flamenco-polka-dots-12

To some, polka dots conjure images of Minnie Mouse and wholesome charm, but to me, they represent seduction, grace and the power of the feminine form. And I think that’s because I most immediately associate them with the traditional traje de flamenco—the most famous version of the dress worn by the traditional dancers of Andalusia. Polka dots of white or black pattern these stunningly tiered and flared silhouettes, adding an extra dose of visual movement to the swirling layers.

Although polka dots have been en vogue in some form since the 1920s, this combination of spots and tiered ruffles feels suddenly fresh and desirable. I first took note of this trend after falling in love with the Spanish-inspired Dolce & Gabbana SS2015 show, and I’ve since been seeing spots everywhere I look. On the diaphanous pleats of a sheer chiffon halter top, atop the mesh tiers of a layered tulle midi skirt and even on the pristine white culottes worn by Olivia Palermo herself.

So scroll down as far as you dare, and take in the best examples of flamenco-inspired polka dots the internet has to offer. If, like me, this particular selection of photos makes you itch to spangle yourself with spots, you can shop some of my polka dotted pics in the widget at the end.

Trendspotting: Bug Embellishments on the Runway

Homemade Banana // Gucci Bug EmbellishmentsHomemade Banana // Gucci Bug EmbellishmentsYou know that phenomenon that occurs when you notice one instance of a particular thing, and from then on out, you start seeing it everywhere? Well, I’ve been full-on bug crazy ever since I spotted delicately embroidered bees atop the puffed mesh sleeve at the Chanel Spring 2016 couture show.  Since botanical prints have been top-of-mind for a few seasons now, it’s only logical that pretty little bug embellishments start to inhabit this sartorial habitat.

From crystal-encrusted ladybugs at Gucci to butterfly embroidery at McQueen and emerald winged beetles at Zac Posen, it’s become clear that insect embellishment is about to generate a lot of buzz. I predict that in a few short seasons, we’ll see a swarm of exquisite creepy crawlies gracing the newest offerings from our favorite fast-fashion retailers. In the meantime, we can all just sit back, relax and witness the birth of a trend.

Trendspotting: Tiny Spoons

Over the past month or so, I’ve noticed a new trend in cutlery popping up on latte saucers across my favorite cafes: the tiny spoon. With a dainty bowl just big enough for a modest helping of sweetener and a slender handle perfect for swirling the cream through your coffee, this diminutive utensil is equal parts miniature form and function. After stirring my morning cup with more than a few tiny spoons, I decided I needed to add a few to my silverware drawer, pronto.

The problem was, I couldn’t find a tiny spoon on the world wide web to save my life. I searched and searched every combination of the words “tiny” “spoon” and “coffee” to no avail. And then, an online curtain parted and I finally found one single, solitary spoon with my desired tiny dimensions. It was called a demitasse spoon and I soon learned that my self-titled Tiny Spoons also masquerade under the names “spice spoon” and “condiment spoon.” Once I finally cracked the SEO code, I was able to round up a baker’s dozen of my very favorite tiny spoons to share with you all. Crisis averted.
