A Very Vintage Christmas

Every year after Christmas at my grandparents’ house, we take a walk in the park. We burn off a few calories in anticipation of the feast that awaits us, and I get to try on some of my brand new accessories. This year, I asked Santa to supplement my vintage pin collection, and my dad and his girlfriend generously complied.

This beautiful wreath-like brooch was made by classic American costume jewelry designer Joseph Warner and displays a high level of craftsmanship that isn’t often found in costume jewelry today. Warner’s signature Japanned (blackened metal) settings offer a rich background for the varying shades of iridescent pink rhinestones that sparkle atop this beautiful vintage piece. I opted to pin it to my (also new!) J.Crew scarf to add a bit of embellishment to my otherwise casual look.

Thanks to the temperate California winter, I didn’t need a jacket; all I had to do was throw on this knit beanie, and Clarabelle and I were ready to hit the trails before heading back to the house to hit the trail mix. Needless to say, a few more long walks—and vintage brooches—are in our future.

What to Wear Apple Picking

Hat: Tommy Hilfiger // Scarf: Zara // Sweater: Target (similar) // Shirt: J.Crew // Pants: Express // Boots: Hunter in Raspberry // Bag: Deus Lux // Necklace: Julie Vos// Bow Ring: Kate Spade // Nails: Deborah Lippmann in Laughin’ to the Bank

What’s that phrase again? As American as apple pie?

As the idiom goes, few things are more quintessentially Yankee than apple pie, baseball (hats) and Tommy Hilfiger. And so, on a recent trek to our local apple orchard, I thought it most appropriate to don a Hilfiger baseball cap sewn with a vintage-inspired felt “H” that I like to pretend stands for Hannah (viva la monogram!).  A cozy knit atop my go-to chambray popover fit the bill for comfort and warmth, while a requisite Zara plaid scarf was ready and waiting for a chilly October breeze to rustle through the apple tree leaves.

For the sake of functionality—and, let’s be honest, fashion—I begrudgingly tempered by All-American look with a new pair of Hunter wellies, beautifully unadorned in all their British glory. Anyway, Brits like apple pie too, right? I’ve found that apart from their trendy appeal, these raspberry-hued rubber beauts are lighter weight and far more comfortable than their less spendy counterparts. I also appreciate that they come in a shorter size, making them much more proportionally appropriate for my five-foot-three frame.

A crisp autumn afternoon spent tromping through tall grass in search of the perfect assortment of ripe apples is one well spent, in my opinion, and made all the richer by cozy clothes and charming company.

Utility Jacket: Check

There aren’t many places to shop around here—a fact that I’ve often bemoaned over the past few months—but recently, I stumbled upon a local gem. Smack dab in the heart of Iowa City, White Rabbit Gallery offers a curated selection of new and vintage items with Midwestern charm.

I popped in recently after hearing about a certain promising vintage section, and left with a woven throw blanket, two jackets (including the one I’m wearing here) and a particularly charming rainbow umbrella. I also have my eye on an assortment of colorful beanies and cold weather accessories, so needless to say, I’ll be back!

12 Days of Christmas Shopping

The holidays will soon be upon us, which means it’s just about time to get started on buying gifts. So, over the next few weeks I’ll be posting a 12-part series featuring my picks for chic presents. For my first 12 Days of Christmas Shopping post, I’ve rounded up a dozen of the most brightly hued, deliciously warm winter scarves.

Ever since this beauty popped up everywhere last year, plaid blanket scarves have been the neckwear du jour for the sartorially inclined. It seems that the blogging community selects one It Scarf at a time, everyone rushes to buy it, and it sells out immediately. Accordingly, I’ve selected 12 scarves that are each worthy of their own obsessions—and aren’t sold out yet.

This festively striped Zara scarf is definitely at the top of my Christmas list, and I’m thinking of adding this ASOS option to my closet before the holiday celebrations begin. I love giving and receiving scarves as gifts, so hopefully this inspires your shopping this year!

Can’t Hardly Wait

The ’90s are back in a big way.

Fashion repeats itself, and we’ve all watched as decades past paraded back into our lives (bellbottoms, anyone?). ’80s neons recently returned with a vengeance, and now it seems that the ’90s are back and much, much better than before.

Crop tops and mirrored sunnies played an important role in this summer’s street style, and will no doubt strut into next summer as well. For fall we’ll see no shortage of dark lips, tartan prints and platforms. And thanks to Dannijo, we have the rebirth of the choker to look forward to. As long as those butterfly clips stay in the past, this is one sartorial decade that I’m happy to say hello (again) to.
