The 55 Best Things in the Zara Sale

This is not a drill. My very favorite sale is here, and it’s a good one. In case you’re not a serial shopper like I am, I’ll take a quick second to clue you in. As of 12:00 a.m. EST today, hundreds of styles at Zara are on sale, and the best ones are sure to sell out before the day is over.

That’s why I stayed up late (that, and I have to drive my brother to the airport at 4 a.m.) to comb through all the pages of sale items and round up my very favorite 55 things. There are pieces in here that are causing me physical pain not to buy—but don’t worry, my no-shopping mandate is still firmly intact.

I’m channeling all my expert shopping energy into encouraging you, my friends, into buying this perfectly charming wicker basket bag, and this painfully chic striped midi skirt or maybe the ultimate power suit in a striking red stretch cotton. Seriously, this stuff is so good and such a bargain so shop like the wind! And send me pictures of your sale hauls so I can live vicariously through all you carefree consumers, por favor.

Polka Dot Jumpsuit

Jumpsuit: Zara (sold out, similar here) // Cardigan: Target // Hat: Target (old, similar) // Shoes: Zara (old, similar) // Bag: Forever 21 (old, similar) // Sunglasses: Prada // Bracelet: Kate Spade // Watch: Michael Kors

This polka-dot jumpsuit was a last-minute purchase at Zara. My sister and I were doing some speed shopping on my last trip down to San Antonio, and as we were running to the registers to check out, I plucked this little number off the sale rack and bought it without trying it on. Sometimes these things are just fated.

I love the tied waist that adds structure to the silhouette. I love the wide flowing legs and, of course, I love the polka dots. When the weather gets hot, I’ll style this puppy with some strappy sandals and not much else, but for now I’m happy to toss on a lightweight cardigan and my favorite lace-up heels for a look that’s equally at home at work and on a Sunday afternoon stroll through small town Iowa.

Hello, Iowa

white-lace-dress-8white-lace-dress-5white-lace-dress-1white-lace-dress-7white-lace-dress-4 white-lace-dress-2white-lace-dress-6
Dress: Zara (old) // Shoes: Boden // Ring: Julie Vos // Necklaces: Francesca’s and Flea Market

For my first blog post in the heartland, I wanted to evoke a sense of out-on-the-farmness, so I went for the obvious backdrop. Having never been to Iowa before relocating here a month ago, the only image my city slicker mind could conjure when prompted with the idea of Iowa was fields upon fields of corn. And in that respect, I wasn’t wrong about the Hawkeye state—of corn, and soy, there is plenty.

Other than the requisite corn, I really had no idea what to expect of my new hometown. This was mostly by design; I worked hard to keep my imagination at bay and my expectations low. I surmised that if I simply had no idea what to expect in Iowa City, I couldn’t be disappointed. Thankfully, this theory proved to be true. In fact, I’ve found myself mostly quite charmed by this place.

Where I vaguely imagined flat cornfields as far as the eye can see, there are rolling hills with sun-dappled shade oaks and stately silos in various states of picturesque decay. Where I assumed there would be a dearth of brunch options, there are quaint establishments named The Bluebird Diner and Hamburg Inn (the latter of which is apparently a mandatory stop on the presidential campaign tour come election season). Where I feared I would find a limited selection of the produce I was used to in California, I’ve been treated to locally grown squash blossoms, beets, and corn so sweet it would not be an overstatement to say it tastes like candy.

Thanks to Max’s Craigslist efforts, we have set up shop a tiny white Dutch Colonial Revival (aka barn-style) house on the east side of town, just far enough away from all the undergrads. It has two porches and some built-in bookshelves, so I’m a happy girl. It also has a lovely ivy-covered garage in the back, which I am sure I will soon employ as a photo backdrop.

And that brings us to the shopping. As pleasantly surprised I have been with the situation here, I’ll admit I was slightly appalled to learn that in the whole state of Iowa, there is not one single Zara, H&M, or Nordstrom. I guess online shopping will have to do between our semi-regular trips to Chicago.

So, for those of you who have asked, this pretty much describes my life in Iowa so far: lots of sun, food, online shopping, and getting settled in. And I’m more than okay with that.

White Out

Something about Spring makes me want to dress in as much white as possible. I keep thinking of Daisy Buchanan, lounging in gauzy white dresses while linen curtains billow over her. So when I wandered into Gap over the weekend and saw this drapey v-neck sweater in a perfect, creamy shade of white, I snapped it up.

It was the last one left, it was my size, and it was on sale! Plus, it’s about 10% silk, so it’s super soft and lightweight—perfect for San Francisco. Since I’ve been hoarding white items as of late, I decided to wear them all together for a fresh and clean look. I balanced the casual style of boyfriend jeans with these sparkly new earrings and ladylike white d’orsay pumps. Something tells me I’ll be wearing a lot of white this season.
